From Stress to Optimal Performance
š Message from Dr Rana
April is Stress Awareness Month.
But letās be honest⦠in dentistry, stress isnāt something we become aware of once a year.
Itās constant. Itās expected, and too often⦠itās accepted. Thatās where the problem begins because what if stress isnāt the enemy?
What if the real issue is that weāve never been taught how to use it?
Over the years - whether speaking on BBC Radio about stress in dentistry, appearing on Talk Radio, or discussing types of stress on TV- one thing has become very clear:
Itās not stress thatās the problem. Itās unmanaged stress.
And more importantlyā¦
Itās misdirected energy.
š§ A Different Way to Think About Stress
Most people see stress as something to reduce, avoid, or escape, but high performers donāt eliminate stress. They convert it.
Because stress, at its core, is simply:
Energy without direction.
š„ Insight #1
Stress doesnāt burn you out. Misalignment does. When your actions, values, and environment are not aligned - stress becomes overwhelming.
When they are aligned? That same pressure becomes focus, drive, and performance.
āļø Not All Stress Is Equal
In my TV discussions, Iāve broken stress down into different types - because not all stress behaves the same way.
Some stress:
- Sharpens your thinking
- Elevates your performance
- Helps you rise when it matters most
Other stress:
- Drains your energy
- Clouds your judgement
- Keeps you stuck in survival mode
š The difference is not the stress itself.
š The difference is how you process and lead through it.
š„ Insight #2
The same pressure can either elevate you⦠or exhaust you.
š From Stress ā Performance ā Leadership
At NAIL-IT, we donāt teach stress management as a standalone concept.
We teach it as part of a performance system.
Because:
- Stress impacts your focus
- Focus impacts your decisions
- Decisions impact your results
- Results shape your leadership
š„ Insight #3
You donāt perform despite stress. You perform through it.
š What This Looks Like in Practice
This isnāt just theory. This is what weāve been bringing into dentistry over the past month.
At the BDIA Dental Showcase, the entire NAIL-IT team created something completely different: the first-ever BREATHE & NAIL-IT Wellbeing Zone.
Every 20 minutes, we delivered short, high-impact sessions on performance, leadership, and wellbeing, and every hour, on the hour and half hourā¦
š The bell rang across the Excel.
And the entire room stopped to reset.
Press-ups. Squats. Breathwork. Emotional regulation.
Not as a gimmick - but as a statement:
š Wellbeing isnāt something you talk about. Itās something you practise.
It became the energy hub of the entire show.
Alongside this, Iāve had the privilege of speaking across multiple platforms this month:
- š¤ BDA Study Day ā Burnout prevention and sustainable success
- šļø OCDO Theatre at BDIA ā How to reduce stress and build sustainable performance
- 𦷠British Society of Oral Surgery Conference ā Wellbeing, burnout, and what to actually do about it
And continuing the conversation in the media:
- š» Talk Radio Interview ā Why stress in dentistry is rising and how NAIL-IT Leadership provides a real solution
šļø NAIL-IT Podcast
Weāve also had some powerful conversations this month:
- Lucie Simic ā On changing your story and stepping into a new identity
- Nishma Sharma ā On thriving through adversity and building resilience
Real conversations. Real experiences. Real strategies.
ā¤ļø A Moment That Meant a Lot
We also celebrated the launch of NAIL-IT Leadership: Your Blueprint to Optimal Performance.
A truly special evening - made even more meaningful by the fact that all proceeds were donated to Bridge2Aid.
Because leadership isnāt just about performance.
š Itās about impact.
š± A Thought to Leave You With
As we move through Stress Awareness Month, Iād invite you to pause and reflect:
- Where is your stress coming from?
- Is it pressure, or is it misalignment?
- What might change if you stopped resisting it⦠and started using it?
Weāll be exploring this more over the coming weeks -
including how to recognise your stress patterns, and how to shift from survival mode into optimal performance.
šÆ For Nowā¦
Just notice.
Your energy. your triggers, your patterns.
Because awareness isnāt the end goal.
š Itās the starting point.
Letās change the conversation around stress - together.
With clarity,
Dr Rana Al-Falaki
Founder, NAIL-IT in Dentistry
